2024

2023 Participants

About the Program

Bunkyo Gakuin has hosted the 2023 and 2024 Knowledge Co-Creation Programs on the holistic Japanese model of schooling run by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The program helps participants learn about the Japanese model of educating the total child based on a holistic framework which integrates subjects and nonsubjects (e.g., tokkatsu and sogo), cognitive and noncognitive learning. The model is practiced nationwide,  throughout Japanese schooling at various levels.

Scenes from the Program

Visiting Schools

The program helps participants observe and understand the philosophy and common patterns of the holistic framework across different age levels, regions, public-private schools, as well as across schools with different forms of diversity (e.g., based on nationality, ethnicity, intellectual and physical challenges, community characteristics, etc.)

Visiting Communities

Since the education of the total child cannot succed without the cooperation of the community, the program introduces the participants to different types of schools, together with their community contexts. One of the communities the participants visited in the 2024 program was the Ota industrial district with innovative small and medium sized companies.

Observing Schooling in Other Prefectures

The 2024 program provided an overnight visit to a kindergarten type integrated children's center, a day care type center, and a company-run day care center, as well as a public elementary school in Shizuoka Prefecture. Both boast a beautiful view of Mr. Fuji.

Workshops

Workshops by teachers, policymakers, and researchers were provided to deepen the understanding of what the participants were experiencing.

Bunkyo-JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program 2023

2024 is the second year Bunkyo Gakuin has hosted JICA's program on learning about schooling based on a holistic framework which integrates subjects and nonsubjects (e.g., tokkatsu and sogo), cognitive and noncognitive learning, which can be seen throughout Japanese schooling at various levels. This YouTube video introduces a school visit of the 2023 participants.
